3rd Grade Pumpkin Paintings

As we settle into October, our students are hard at work creating their fall masterpieces.  3rd graders are learning Color Theory as they have fun creating pumpkins for our soon to be revealed Pumpkin Patch!  These amazing pumpkins were first drawn in black oil pastels, then painted using only primary colors.  No orange or green used here!

Students had to create their own unique shade of orange using yellow and red paints.
Leaves were also drawn, blue and yellow were mixed to produce the green!

3rd Grade The Cat in the Hat!

March is Dr. Suess Month! Our 3rd graders did an amazing job of drawing their version of Dr. Suess' beloved, Cat in the Hat. The students were shown how to approach the drawing using directed line and then added their own flair to it.  We kept the painting simple, just the red stripes & bow tie, and lastly created bold backgrounds with chalk pastel on colored paper.  These drawings bring a smile to everyone who views them!  Great job third grade!

3rd Grade Marvelous Moose!

The 3rd Graders created a multi-media collage of a northern moose in a snow scene.  First they painted their backgrounds depicting the snowy countryside of northern Canada.  Then we drew our moose on brown construction paper & added features and textured fur with oil pastels.  The antlers were cut out separately and purposely enlarged for effect. After viewing many pictures of moose, we realized just how big those antlers are!  The last step was to glue everything down.  Happy, marvelous Moose!

3rd Grade Painted Paper Christmas Trees

St. Mary 3rd Graders created these majestic Christmas Trees by first creating sheets of painted paper.
Then snow was painted on various blue backgrounds.  The trees are torn strips of the painted paper and the students finished the multi-media piece by creating presents and ornaments out of patterned and painted paper.  It definitely put us in the Christmas spirit!

3rd Grade Bird Drawings

The 3rd grade had fun with this first drawing project of the year.  Using a directed line, the students drew these fun whimsical birds.  We talked about line and pattern in art and things we see everyday.  After the birds were drawn, they had fun completing them with patterns and bright colors.  Some students were able to incorporate foreground and background concepts into this piece as well!

3rd Grade Great Pumpkins!

Could one of these pumpkins be the Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown was waiting for in the pumpkin patch that night?!  Who knows?  3rd graders did an amazing job on these pumpkin masterpieces!  First they created their drawings by looking at real pumpkins in front of them.  Then with only primary colors, red, yellow and blue; they painted their pumpkins & leaves by mixing paint right on the paper. No orange and green paint!  Lastly, the nighttime pumpkin patch scene was created using chalk pastels and black paper.  Spectacular!
