SketchBooks in the Art Room!

Students in grades 5th - 8th are using sketchbooks are a major part of their Art cirriculum this year. One of their first assignments was to design an original cover of the sketch book, incorporating lettering, composition and of course - their own creative personality.

Sketching and doodling are important, not only for budding artists, but for creative thinking and problem solving.  It is a valuable tool that engages the mind, enhances our memory retention and concentration by creating a visual language.  Many of our most creative minds have kept sketchbooks...Thomas Edison, Leonardo Da Vinci just to name a few!

SketchBooks are important...and fun!  Keep Doodling!

7th Grade Northern Lights Paintings

The seventh graders painted these striking landscapes depicting the Northern Lights. The paintings were based loosely on the work of painter Ted Harrison, a painter known for his use of line and bright color, who paints the Yukon landscapes where he lives.  The students were asked to create tints and shades of the bright colors selected for their paintings and use them in creating the abstract landscapes you see here.

7th Grade The Holy Family

The 7th grade created these bold graphic illustrations of the Holy Family.  Their only restrictions were to keep the Holy Family as one unit, a single graphic element, and the focal point of the illustration.  They were also encouraged to use bold colors and repeating patterns in their designs.

7th Grade T.R Mack Trees

The 7th grade took a look at the artist T.R Mack and his beautiful paintings of trees.  Incorporating color theory into this project, they created tree  paintings in a similar style as TR Mack.  First they painted their backgrounds in either monochromatic or analogous cool colors.  After the striking black trees were painted in, the students were asked to add the circles or swirls in an analogous color scheme that is complimentary to the background colors.  They results were extremely dynamic!
